[....]"Hunger today is not people starving in the streets, but it's people choosing between food and rent," he told The Awl "It's parents going without food to feed their children, and the greatest irony of all is that people are buying cheaper food that is less nutritious and more filling ..."
[....]"Growing your own good garden gives you a steady food supply that you can control," the "Food Shock" report said, "The average American eats just under 2,000 pounds of food per year. Even a relatively small garden of 600 square feet produces about a pound of fresh produce per square yard, or 600 pounds during a growing season. That represents 30 percent of your total food intake for a year."[....]"
An analysis reported on November 11, 2010 by our own Dr. Lloyd Case reports the following in his article titled Analysis: Food Stamp Data and the Recession 'Recovery':
"Americans are rightly worried about the great recession we are now experiencing. Many politicians are saying it is easing, or that we have stepped back from the brink. Numbers are being spun to show the “truth” of their statements. Our CSIA analysts looked for some numbers that the feds report which are perhaps un-doctored by the “spin misters”. We decided that USDA food stamps (“SNAP” Special Nutritional Assistance Program) numbers were a safe bet. First, these numbers are not often reported and are not used in the “justification hoaxes” currently happening. Second, these numbers are a “real time” measure of the misery and lack of employment in America. We found them quite enlightening.
Below are some graphs we have generated from their numbers from October 2006 through August 2010. Remember that the “recession” started around the May of 2008; although some argue before that. Lehman Brothers failed in September 2008.
The actual costs of the program show a less smooth increase over time and a larger percentage increase than the numbers of participant does----
Some of this difference is caused by the increase of the expenditures per person. The average cost per person was increased because of changing need.
Clearly each of these charts shows increases of about 200% from pre-recession expenses and participation in SNAP. All the charts show rising participation (need) in recent months. Indeed, the “summer of recovery” shows nothing but increased hunger in America. There is NO evidence that these food stamp trends suggest an easing of the recession. Indeed, they all trend upward, suggesting a growing recession. Since these are food needs of the unemployed and under employed – one can only believe that our economic present and future holds NO SIGNS of recovery or of an easing recession.
This analyst cannot see any impact on the needs growth from an economic stimulus passed in January 2009. The hesitation in growth from December 2008 to May 2009 in the last two charts could be due to unemployment benefits or the economy waiting to see if there is an impact from the stimulus but this would have to be psychology because funds were not expended in December of 2008. Disbursement awaited passage and disbursement in February 2009.
One must conclude:
1) There are NO SIGNS Of THE RECESSION SLOWING from these data. Indeed, these numbers instead SUGGEST A DEEPENING OF THE ECONOMIC DOWNTURN.
2) The nearly 1 trillion dollar “Economic Stimulus Package” DID NOT IMPROVE the economy which continued from its passage to deepen at an accelerated pace.
3) The Federal administration policies have NO APPARENT POSITIVE EFFECT on America’s great recessional events.
