The now 23 state wide salmonella outbreak caused by tainted tomatoes of still unknown origin has succeeded in refocusing public attention on the safety of the nation’s food supply. As might be predicted calls have been sounded for tougher regulatory laws and more money for the US Food and Drug administration (FDA). After spending several months holding up funding for the investigation of Tinted foods the Bush administration last week announced through the Health and Human Services (HHS) department that it was boosting its FDA 2009 budget by $275 million.
